Apple co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the President of the United States today.

In announcing the recipient earlier this week, the White House said Jobs’ inventions changed the way the world communicates.

Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted in recognition of Jobs’ award, saying Jobs was a “visionary” who saw “what the world could look like.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States and is awarded to those who have “made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values or security of the United States, world peace or other significant social, public or private endeavors.
