Apple officially released four iPhone 13 series smartphones last month, and early reports stated that the camera performance of the iPhone 13 Pro is better than that of the iPhone 12 Pro. Now, according to the latest camera evaluation shared by DxOMark, we are once again delighted to find that even the iPhone 13 Standard Edition / 13 mini, its camera performance has surpassed last year’s iPhone 12 Pro.

DxOMark pointed out that the scores of the photo/video test items of the iPhone 13 standard model were 138/117 (1 point higher than the iPhone 12 Pro), and the zoom score also had 55 points.

As mentioned earlier, Apple introduced the Sensor-Shift anti-shake system based on sensor displacement in the iPhone 12 Pro Max released in the fall of 2020, and it was fully decentralized to the iPhone 13 product line this year.

Although the iPhone 13 standard version does not have a dedicated telephoto module, this test has some improvements over last year’s iPhone 12 models.

In particular, the main camera sensor has been upgraded to the same size as last year’s flagship, supplemented by dual-pixel autofocus instead of the PDAF phase detection autofocus solution.

The light passes through the lens with f/1.6 aperture, and the Sensor-Shift system can maintain the image stability. In addition, the iPhone 13 is equipped with a super wide-angle sub-camera, but the specifications are the same as last year’s iPhone 12.

Combining various improvements, DxOMark believes that the iPhone 13’s camera performance is better than the previous generation, with enhanced color and white balance performance. Even under strong light conditions, the restoration of the character’s skin tone is quite real.

The iPhone 13’s camera can autofocus quickly, accurately, and repeatably, as does the video shooting experience. However, in some respects, iPhone 13 still has room for further improvement.

For example, when zooming from a medium distance to a long distance, the lack of a telephoto lens still drags down the detailed performance of the iPhone 13. In addition, the iPhone 13 has more noise in low-light video, and the dynamic range in high-contrast scenes also faces challenges.

Even so, the iPhone 13/13 mini still ranked 10th in the DxOMark smart phone list, which is comparable to the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
