How to prevent the glasses from sliding down
6 min readAlways need to push back the slipped glasses? Maybe it’s time to make some adjustments so that the glasses don’t slip off. If you are in a hurry, you can try many quick fixes at home to temporarily fix the glasses in place. If you want a more permanent solution, you may need to adjust the frames so that they fit your head and won’t slip off all day long.
Method 1: Repair glasses at home
1. Wash your face and remove natural oils. Oil on the skin can cause the glasses to slip off the nose. The most effective way is to use natural skin care products that can remove oil and wash your face 1-2 times a day. Apply the cleanser to the skin, then rinse thoroughly, put on glasses, and see if it will slide down
The body may secrete more oil throughout the day. Carry cleaning wipes with you so that you can wipe off excess oil at any time.
Frequent use of cleansers to remove oils may dry out the skin.
2. Wrap the hair rope around the temples to increase the grip. Prepare two hair ropes that match the color of the frame, so that they fit perfectly into the temples and won’t look obtrusive. Slide one of the hair ropes into one third of the temples, stop and make a circle. Tighten the hair rope, and then thread it into the temple again. Continue to circle a few times until the hair rope is close to the temple, then switch sides and repeat.
Try to keep the hair rope flat against the temples to avoid uncomfortable wearing.
Try hair ropes of various thicknesses to see which one fits the temples best and is the most comfortable to wear.
3. Apply wax to the middle beam of the glasses to prevent it from sliding down. Glasses non-slip wax is installed in a tube like lip balm, which provides friction between the frame and the nose. Open the lid and apply a small amount of wax to the middle beam of the glasses. Put on your glasses and see if it still slips easily. If it still slips, apply more wax.
You can buy non-slip wax for glasses online or at a local pharmacy.
Warning: The glasses must fit the head for the anti-slip wax to play the best role. Go to an optical shop or find an optometrist and ask them to measure your face to confirm the frame size that suits you.
4. Put heat shrinkable tubes on the temples to make them tighter. After the heat shrinkable tube is heated, it will shrink according to the size of the attached items. Put the heat-shrinkable tube on the temples on both sides and slide it up until it is close to the ears. Raise the heat gun, adjust it to the low temperature range, and blow on the heat shrink tube from a distance of 10-13 cm for 30 seconds to shrink it.
You can buy heat shrink tubing at your local hardware store. Choose a heat-shrink tube that matches the color of the frame, so that it doesn’t look too obtrusive.
If you don’t have a heat gun, you can use a hair dryer adjusted to the highest temperature.
The heat gun should not be blown against the glasses for too long, otherwise the frame of the glasses will be damaged or melted.
Some frames have rubber strips on the temples to increase grip.
Method 2: Adjust the frame
1. If the glasses keep slipping off the nose, consider replacing the nose pads. Use the small screwdriver in the glasses repair kit to loosen the screw on the nose pad and remove it. Pull out the old nose pads and replace them with new ones. Tighten the screws, then repeat on the other side.
You can buy replacement nose pads online or at an optical shop.
The optometrist can also charge a small fee to help you replace your nose pads. Tip: If the frame does not have nose pads, you can buy a non-slip mat and stick it on the middle bridge to fix the glasses in place.
2. If the nose pads on the frame can be adjusted, try to adjust the spacing between them. Some frames and nose pads are not integrated and can be adjusted by yourself. Grasp the outer edge of the nose pads with your index finger and thumb, and carefully push them closer. Make sure that the distance between the nose pads on both sides is the same to prevent the glasses from becoming one high and one low.
If you accidentally push the nose pads too close, you can push them away again to increase the distance.
Be careful not to bend the nose pads excessively so as not to accidentally break them.
If you are not worried about doing it yourself, you can take the frame to the optician or find an optometrist and let them adjust it for you.
3. Adjust the angle of the temple area of the glasses so that it is close to the head. The angle of the temple determines whether the temples fit the sides of the head and firmly adhere to the head. If it is a metal frame, hold the bottom of the temple with your non-dominant hand, and hold the end of the temple with needle-nose pliers with the other hand. Carefully bend the temples towards the inside of the frame to make them more secure. If it is a plastic frame, first heat it with a hair dryer at high temperature for 1-2 minutes, and then bend them by hand.
You can also bring the frame to the optometrist and let them adjust it for you.
4. Put non-slip ear hooks on the temples to prevent them from shifting. The ear hook is a small rubber ring that can be inserted into the temple to prevent the glasses from slipping off the ear. Put the ear hooks into the ears of the temples on both sides to keep the glasses flat.
You can buy non-slip ear hooks online or in optical shops.
Method 3: Obtain a suitable size frame
1. Measure your face and confirm the frame size that suits you. Go to an optician or an optometrist and ask them to measure your face. The optician staff or optometrist will accurately measure the length of the lenses, middle bridge and temples you need.
For example, the size of your glasses may be 55-18-140, where 55 mm refers to the width of the lens, 18 mm refers to the width of the bridge, and 140 mm is the length of the temples.
If your glasses fit your head very well, then directly check the 3 sets of numbers marked on the temples to confirm the size.
Some glasses buying apps have measurement tools to help you estimate the size that suits you using the phone’s camera.
Tips: Don’t choose the “one-size-fits-all” frames, they may be too big or too small for you, and they may fall off easily.
2. Buy glasses with anti-skid strips at the end of the temples. This kind of glasses will not slip off easily. The anti-slip strip is made of rubber, and is inserted into the frame to increase friction and prevent the glasses from slipping off. After confirming the frame size, look for glasses with non-slip strips on the ends of the temples, and wear them to see how they feel.
If the frame is too tight, it will become more uncomfortable to wear.
If you can’t find glasses with non-slip strips, you can also buy additional non-slip strips to fit your glasses.
3. Use adjustable nose pads to tighten them at any time. The nose pads of many glasses are not integrated with the frame for easy adjustment. After confirming the frame size, look for glasses with adjustable nose pads at a local optical shop or online. If the nose pads are too loose to be firmly attached to the bridge of the nose, you can push them closer to better attach to your face.
If your favorite frame does not have adjustable nose pads, you can attach a nose pad to help support the glasses.
Tips
Go to an optician or find an optometrist to get glasses that fit your face shape. In this way, you can buy frames of the right size without worrying about them sliding down.
