ProRes video export test M1 Max MBP is three times faster than 2019 Mac Pro 1

M1 Max’s test of ProRes video export shows that the high-end 2021 MacBook Pro is three times faster than the 2019 Mac Pro. Macworld pointed out that even if you install the Afterburner accelerator card on the Mac Pro, the M1 Max MacBook Pro is still twice as fast as the Mac Pro.

To reach the highest echelon of ProRes performance on the 2019 Mac Pro, you need a 28-core Intel Xeon W CPU with an Afterburner card to accelerate ProRes playback and decoding. In terms of advanced color correction, two powerful GPUs will also help. Of course, all these have to pay a high price.

The M1 Max in the MacBook Pro includes two ProRes encoders and decoders, which far exceed the performance of a single decoder in the Afterburner accelerator card of the Mac Pro.

These running points show how much Apple attaches importance to the performance of its ProRes. Not only that, this will also greatly improve the playback performance of multi-stream 8K content.

The test shows how long it takes to export a 5-minute ProRes Raw video clip to ProRes 422 HQ:

2019 Mac Pro: 233 seconds

2019 Mac Pro with Afterburner accelerator card: 153 seconds

2021 MacBook Pro with M1 MAX chip: 76 seconds
