Reduce carbon footprint Amazon plans to replace delivery fleets with electric freight cars
1 min readE-commerce giant Amazon plans to replace its truck delivery fleet in London with electric freight cars, a move motivated by a desire to reduce its carbon footprint.
As part of this effort, Amazon will open a micro-mobility center in Hackney. Amazon will replace thousands of delivery vans with electric cargo vans and delivery crews on foot, which will be rolled out first in London.
The Hackney micro-mobility center is the first of its kind for Amazon, which hopes to make up to 5 million deliveries a year and cover about 10 percent of London’s ultra-low emission zone.
The electric freight cars will be operated by several Amazon partnerships, and Amazon is pursuing a global net-zero carbon status, according to John Bumphrey, Amazon’s U.K. chief executive.
The project will be scaled up in other parts of the UK in the coming months as micro-mobility hubs are opened.
